What Not to Flush Down Sinks, Drains, and Toilets!!!

We are once again experiencing some major sewer backups and we are quite surprised to see some of the items that are being flushed down our toilets, sinks, and drains – and therefore backing up into our members’ basements!  The following information is an excerpt from the City of Calgary website and serves as a reminder of the items that DO NOT belong in our sewer systems!

Keep these items out of your sinks, drains or toilets!

Food waste

  • Fats, grease and oils (deep fryer oil, vegetable oil, cooking oil)

  • Lard, butter, salad dressing, marinade for meats

  • Vegetables, meat, pasta, bread, and other food waste items

The best way to dispose of oils is to pour them in a container such as tin can, empty coffee cup or milk carton. Place it into the trash once the container is cooled.

Leftover grease and oil should be removed from pans before washing them. Save water and soap by using a napkin to wipe them clean.

Bathroom items

  • Diapers, wet wipes, rags, bandages

  • Dental floss, cotton swabs, condoms, cosmetics

  • Personal hygiene products (tampons, applicators, sanitary napkins)

  • Pills and medicine – expired prescription medication

Pills and medicine should be returned to your pharmacist for disposal.

Household items

  • Cigarette butts, paper towels

  • Children toys

Hazardous waste

  • Bleach and ammonia

  • Clean solvents and spot removers

  • Disinfectants

  • Hot tub and swimming pool chemicals

  • Oven cleaners

  • Septic tank cleaners

  • Alkyd, latex and oil-based paints

  • Lacquers, stains and varnishes

  • Paint thinners, strippers and solvents

  • Petroleum-based products such as motor oil and gasoline

You can drop off household hazardous waste at no charge at one of the City of Calgary’s year-round household hazardous waste drop-off locations.

The closest one to Sarcee Meadows is:

  • Lincoln Park / Garrison Green Fire Station # 20 (2800 Peacekeepers Way SW)
